What Does It Mean to Have Holiday Spirit?

By Brianna Harvey

Do I feel like I have experienced the holiday spirit this year? Yes. I do. Why? Cause it’s been rare since the last time we saw all downtown Deming buildings kind of full. The past couple of days downtown Deming has been full of Christmas lights and events. The community is coming together this year.

The Christmas light parade has always been small. The parade was never anywhere near as popular as the Duck Race Parade. This year way more people came together to put on a spectacular show. The event ended with Deming’s first annual tree lighting ceremony. These new traditions are putting people in the holiday spirit while also getting the community involved.

To me, the meaning of holiday spirit is just wishing everyone a happy holidays, being in a good mood, and helping others. I think if the community continues to do this, we will gain Christmas spirit every year.

Midterm Election Results

By Anyssa Maese

It has officially happened folks! Midterm elections have come and gone in the blink of an eye. For thousands of New Mexicans, midterm elections are one of the most important elections out there because the people we essentially elect, effect all of us, as well as our everyday lives. With a record-shattering number of early voters, this has been one of the best turnouts at the poll New Mexico has ever seen.

For the people who couldn’t vote, or maybe, unfortunately just didn’t vote, here’s a condensed look at what our new elected officials bring to the table and what exactly that means for us New Mexicans!

U.S. Senate: Martin Heinrich

  • Agriculture: Farmers and ranchers play a critical role in New Mexico’s economy, and sees that they have faced several challenges today such as water shortage and wildfires. Is a strong advocate for a bill which aims to help our farmers and ranchers who struggle due to these issues.

  • Military & National Security: Is committed to ensuring that our military and intelligence communities have the tools necessary to keep our nation safe, fight terrorism, and support our allies. Is also a strong supporter of human and constitutional rights, and opposed the authorization of the PATRIOT Act and wants to do away with the policy “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.”

New Mexico Governor: Michelle Lujan Grisham

  • Education: Believes that investments our education system are vital-especially early childhood education, supporting and retaining effective teachers, and giving parents a greater role in their children’s education. Is on route to ensure that our schools, teachers, and children have the best opportunity to succeed.

  • LGBTQ: Strongly supported the decision to legalize same-sex marriage, and is continuing to work towards equality for all as unfortunately LGBTQ Americans continue to face discrimination in the community and their workplaces. Believes Congress must strengthen protections for LGBT Americans.

  • Women’s Rights: Recognizes the importance of women’s safety, health, and economic security. Is working with other members of the house to help continuously improve the lives of women and families.

U.S. House Congress: Xochitl Torres Small

  • Immigration: Believes our immigration system is broken. Wants to continue working on border safety and protection to keep traffickers and violent criminals out. Is trying to give Customs and Border Protection updated technology and personnel they need to make this happen.  Also, is fighting for a path to citizenship for DREAMers and others without criminal history who are living, working, and paying taxes across America.

  • Health Care: Strongly feels that everyone should have access to quality, affordable health care. Wants to talk to pharmaceutical companies about lowering the cost of prescription drugs, and strengthening Medicare. Is working across party lines to expand rural health care access by motivation and encouraging health professionals to serve our rural communities.

New Mexico Public Lands Commissioner: Stephanie Garcia Richard

  • Education: Would not do anything to jeopardize the funding of our schools. Has successfully fought to increase teacher pay and funding for our classrooms.

  • Is trying to end the backroom deals that allow others to pollute our lands, waste our water and pay less than Texas and is planning to do so through renewables and oil and gas.

The Taki Trade

By Isaiah Chavez

Chips are taking over the school! With such a high demand student are taking it into their own hands to start selling goods. Some would say it is not a big deal, but that would be wrong. Administration says selling food for self-profit is not allowed in school. After witnessing an illegal chip transaction the  Admin confiscates the bag of chips and kept it in the office where the student's parent may pick it up, to this day it remains in the office.

After further evaluation the chips being sold did not meet FDA regulations and some bags were even expired. Not to mention all the chip bags  found on campus leaving a mess for janitors and teachers.

But the vending machines sell chips, right? Yes, they do but the chips are whole grain and baked which is supposed to be a healthier option for students, they also donate a percentage to the school. Also, according to the school district, food is supposed to be sold a certain distance from the cafeteria. Due to high demand Coca-Cola will be adding three more vending machines. Two will be placed in Hofacket campus. Admin informed me that they will also be adding a concession stand at Hofacket. Anyone caught selling any goods for personal profit will be assigned lunch detention or ISS.

Voting Matters

by Anyssa Maese

Your vote matters!

Elections are upon us folks, and now, more than ever, we need your vote! Now I know what you’re probably thinking, “My vote doesn’t even matter so, what’s the point?” and yeah, we’ve heard that one numerous times. Second favorite line? “My mom made me register now that I’m 18 but like, I’m just voting to make her happy.” But the truth behind these lines, and excuses? Well, your vote is just that. Your. Vote. Make it count!

I’m here to talk to you about why exactly you should vote, and why now, more than ever, us young people need to get out there and take more control of what exactly is going on around us.

According to TheBestColleges.org in 2016, “young votes accounted for half of the voting population, making us a powerful political force” This is a very important fact to be aware of because that statement alone shows just how much of an impact we have on the political world. Many young people fail to take an interest in politics, or are just simply not educated enough on the topic itself to really get a grasp on what the broad spectrum of politics truly entails. As the youngest registered voters, eighteen-year-olds, are usually high school seniors, we must really aim to get our voices heard on important topics because matter of the fact is, “while you may not care now, you might in four years.” Decisions made right now, have the potential to affect your life in the future, or even, your children’s life.

Moral of the story? Vote! Elections are right around the corner (November 6th), and we need each voice heard. Your vote does matter, and as an individual who has the right to vote, you should because you want to, not because you want to make your mother happy. Be a responsible civilian and get out there! These are important decisions that have the potential to affect you and those around you. See you at the voting polls!

Remember!

  • Register to vote when you turn 18.

  • Participate in early voting!

  • Encourage your family members and friends to get out and vote!

  • Be an educated voter!

Freshman Class

Food Drive

Iris Valenzuela, freshman class historian, along with the class of 2022 is conducting a Thanksgiving Turkey Drive for Columbus and Palomas.

We are asking the community of Deming to help donate items to this cause.  We would like to give a basket to a family in both Columbus NM and Palomas Mexico.

Other clubs and organizations are welcome to contribute to this Turkey Drive as well.  It would be great if we get extra food/supplies for more families in need.
